Using Gamified Design to Amplify Outcomes: The Psychology of Badges

You’re working to design a digital experience that will achieve meaningful outcomes. Your client, excited to hook users, asks for “”gamification,”” not really knowing what it means or looks like. What do you do?

In this session, we’ll discuss what gamified design is and the guardrails for applying game elements when we want to change user behaviors. We’ll focus specifically on badges, with case studies of badges that work effectively to reinforce desired behaviors and ones that don’t. Session attendees will leave with an understanding of the underlying psychological mechanisms that badges tap into, and a set of best practices for using badges to amplify results. Perhaps most importantly, attendees will be better able to articulate decisions to use gamification or not to achieve client design goals.
